De Cirque de Gavarnie werd door menige grootheden erkend als een grootse plaats. Zo zijn Victor Hugo en tijdgenoot Gustave Flaubert, gekend van zijn Madame Bovary, grote bewonderaars van deze plek. In 1997 schoof ook UNESCO aan bij deze rij en werd het als werelderfgoed erkend.
