De Camargue is het grootste rivierdelta van West-Europa. Het is een uitgestrekte vlakte die grote pekelmoerassen of étangs omvat, afgesloten van de zee door zandbanken en omringd door rietbedekte moerassen. Deze zijn op hun beurt omringd door een groot cultiveerd gebied. Ongeveer een derde van de Camargue bestaat uit meren of moerassen.
