De Pont d'Avignon was ook een bedevaartsoord voor de schippers van de Rhône, wier beschermheilige Sint Nicolaas was. Aanvankelijk aanbaden zij in de Sint Nicolaaskapel op de brug zelf (waar ook het lichaam van Sint Bénézet begraven lag), maar door het toenemende verval van de brug weigerden de geestelijken nog langer diensten te houden uit angst voor een totale instorting. In de 18e eeuw werd een nieuwe kapel op het droge gebouwd aan de voet van de brug, aan de kant van Avignon.
