In dit dorp leefde de wiskundige en ecoloog Alexander Grothendieck. Hij geldt als een van de grootste wiskundigen van de 20e eeuw én als een radicale pacifist die vanaf 1970 een uitgesproken, bijna profetisch ecologisch wereldbeeld ontwikkelde. Zijn naam is beroemd om de manier waarop hij de structuur van de wiskunde hertekende (schemes, toposes, nieuwe cohomologie‑theorieën) én om zijn breuk met de wetenschappelijke wereld uit morele en ecologische overtuiging.
Na zijn breuk met IHÉS leefde hij in kleine dorpen als Villecun en later Mormoiron, in een sobere, landelijke omgeving; daar combineerde hij lesgeven, activisme en een steeds radicalere distantie van instellingen.
