Het museum, gevestigd in het geboortehuis van Jean-François Champollion, is achter zijn "gevel met duizend letters" gewijd aan de geschiedenis van het schrift in de wereld.
Op basis van het werk van de beroemde ontcijferaar van de hiërogliefen vertellen de collecties het fabelachtige verhaal van het schrift en nodigen u uit een reis te maken door culturen uit de hele wereld: van Mexico tot China, via Egypte en het Nabije Oosten, roepen voorwerpen met penseel, kalmoes of pen deze geschiedenis op die 5300 jaar geleden begon.
