Installé dans la maison natale de Jean-François Champollion, le musée se consacre, derrière sa « façade aux mille lettres », à l’histoire des écritures du monde.
A partir des travaux du célèbre déchiffreur des hiéroglyphes, les collections racontent la fabuleuse aventure de l’écriture et invitent à un voyage à travers les cultures du monde entier : du Mexique à la Chine en passant par l’Égypte et le Proche-Orient, des objets inscrits au pinceau, au calame ou à la plume évoquent cette histoire qui a commencé il y a 5300 ans.
