Het kasteel van Pierrefonds, dat aan het einde van de 14e eeuw werd gebouwd door hertog Lodewijk van Orléans, was een ruïne toen Napoleon III besloot de wederopbouw ervan toe te vertrouwen aan Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Het duurde bijna dertig jaar om het kasteel van Pierrefonds te restaureren, en hoewel Eugène Viollet-le-Duc trouw bleef aan de oorspronkelijke gotische stijl, nam hij enkele vrijheden met de archeologische waarheid. Maar het resultaat is indrukwekkend: een ophaalbrug, acht imposante verdedigingstorens, een donjon? voor een magisch bezoek aan het land van de ridders aan de rand van het bos van Compiègne!
