Wat als je een eeuwenoude obelisk ontdekt?
Het altaar van het vaderland, opgericht in 1796, is het symbool van de burgerzin van de natie.
Die van Thionville is de enige die in Frankrijk bewaard is gebleven.
De monoliet werd ontmanteld op bevel van de Eerste Consul in 1799. Het werd een eenvoudig monument voor de doden op het kerkhof van Thionville en werd in 1948 teruggeplaatst op zijn plaats in het centrum van de stad.
Het draagt met trots het Legioen van Eer en het Croix de Guerre, twee onderscheidingen die in 1920 en 1948 aan Thionville werden toegekend voor haar verzet en dapperheid, die terug te vinden zijn in het citaat uit 1792 "Thionville en haar garnizoen hebben het Vaderland goed verdiend".
