Vanaf 1861 waren de prioriteiten van het Koninkrijk Italië de eenheid en de verdediging van zijn grondgebied. Daarom rustte het Mont-Cenis uit met verschillende forten, waaronder het Ronce fort op een hoogte van 2.286 m, een onovertroffen uitkijkpunt over het meer van Mont-Cenis.
