Eind 2005 opende de Franse president Jacques Chirac het Centre Européen du Résistant Déporté. Het centrum gewijd aan de gedeporteerde verzetsstrijder bevindt zich op enkele passen van het terrein van het Struthof, het enige naziconcentratiekamp op Franse bodem, in de Elzasvallei zo'n 50 km ten zuidwesten van Straatsburg. In het concentratiekamp van Natzweiler-Struthof zijn gedeporteerden uit heel Europa omgekomen. Het ging voornamelijk om politieke gevangenen, tegenstanders van het naziregime en verzetsstrijders. Vanaf 1943 arriveerden ze: Noren, Nederlanders, Belgen, Fransen, in afwachting van hun proces in Duitsland. Na de zomer van 1944 belandden hier eveneens zigeuners en Joden uit de getto's en andere concentratiekampen. Allemaal werden ze ingeschakeld in het werkkamp.
