Op 19 september 1783 lanceerde Montgolfier voor Lodewijk XVI zijn hete luchtballon in Versailles. De eerste "reizigers" waren een schaap, een eend en een haan. Drie km verderop landde de ballon. De dieren waren allen gezond, op de haan na die en trap had gekregen van het schaap. Een maand later zou op 15 oktober 1783 de eerste mens in een ballon opstijgen.
