Het Stadhuis, aan de rand van het Paul Mistral Park, werd gebouwd van 1965 tot 1967 als onderdeel van de voorbereidingen voor de Olympische Winterspelen van 1968. De hoofdarchitect was Maurice Novarina, bijgestaan door Jacques Giovannoni, Jacques Christin en Marcel Welti. Het is gebouwd van staal, glas, aluminium en beton. Het verving het Hôtel de Lesdiguières, de voormalige regeringszetel sinds 1719. De instructies voor een nieuw stadhuis kwamen van de Franse staat in 1962, en de gekozen locatie was bezet door militaire gebouwen en een deel van de locatie van de Internationale Tentoonstelling van Waterkracht en Toerisme in 1925. Het gebouw werd op 18 december 1967 geopend door minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Christian Fouchet, burgemeester Hubert Dubedout en minister van Sport François Missoffe.
