Even ten noorden van Hendaye, aan de Baskische kust, een park ontworpen door landschapsarchitect Eugène Buhler dat uitkijkt over de kliffen en de oceaan, een woning ontworpen als wetenschappelijk laboratorium: dit is Abbadia, het kasteel van het Observatorium, gebouwd tussen 1864 en 1884 voor Antoine d'Abbadie, etnoloog, astronoom, groot reiziger en vurig verdediger van de Baskische cultuur.
De bouwmeester was Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, een architect wiens werk hier een van zijn weinige creaties is.
De neogotische Abbadia, het kasteel van het Observatorium, weerspiegelt de passie van de eigenaar voor het Oosten.
