Place Jeanne d'Arc, voorheen Place du Marché en Place Royale, is het historische hart van de stad. Het verdeelt de hoofdstraten en zorgt voor continuïteit en een uitzonderlijke ruimtelijke eenheid
Er zijn twee homogene gevels te onderscheiden, de ene lineair, de andere gebogen: particuliere herenhuizen en burgerhuizen uit de 16e, 17e en 18e eeuw, van vergelijkbare hoogte, opgetrokken uit bewerkte steen met overwegend horizontale lijnen.
