Het Grote Amfitheater, bekend sinds de 18e eeuw, is sinds de jaren 1960 het onderwerp van een ambitieus onderzoeksprogramma dat de kolossale architectuur en afmetingen onthult.
Met een totale lengte van 148 meter was het gebouw ongeveer 25 meter hoog en was het georganiseerd rond een arena waar gladiatorengevechten, gevechten met wilde dieren en jachten plaatsvonden.
Op de tribunes konden meer dan 17.000 toeschouwers plaatsnemen.
