Alain (Emile Chartier), een van de leidende figuren in de wereld van onderwijs en denken in de eerste helft van de 20e eeuw, werd geboren in Mortagne au Perche in 1868. Het museum dat aan hem is gewijd en is ondergebracht in het Hôtel de Puisaye, biedt een overzicht van zijn leven en werk, met aandacht voor zijn familiale omgeving als kind, zijn studies, de leraar in Bretagne, de vurige leider van de Universités Populaires, de journalist bij La Dépêche de Rouen die het beroemde Propos creëerde, de strijder van 1914, de kunstenaar...
Meubels en vertrouwde voorwerpen herscheppen een deel van de intieme setting van het huis in Le Vésinet waar Alain in 1951 stierf.
