Het Musée du Vieux Montpellier, gelegen op de eerste verdieping van het Hôtel particulier de Varennes, toont meubilair en memorabilia die verband houden met de geschiedenis van Montpellier (Middeleeuwen, 17e en 18e eeuw, Revolutie, Keizerrijk, ...)
De collectie omvat talrijke portretten, gravures, religieuze beeldjes, textiel, enz., en in het bijzonder enkele belangrijke stukken: een Zwarte Madonna met kind uit de 13e eeuw, het "gouden kabinet van de consuls" (17e eeuw) en stenen uit de Bastille
Tijdens uw bezoek ontdekt u de ontvangsthal, de processiezaal, de salon uit de 18e eeuw, de revolutiezaal en de schouwkamer.
