Onder het oppervlak van de kalksteenplateaus leven bijna twintig soorten vleermuizen in het Nationaal Park van de Cevennen in holtes die eeuwenlang door het water zijn gebeeldhouwd. In de winter dwingt het gebrek aan voedsel hen tot een winterslaap. De grotten en spelonken, met hun constante temperatuur en vochtigheid, vormen een ideale schuilplaats in afwachting van de komst van het warme weer.
