Melle dankt zijn oorsprong aan zilverloodmijnen en aan de monetaire werkplaats waar tot in de 10e eeuw Karolingische koninklijke munten werden geslagen. Het verwelkomt pelgrims naar Compostela, zoals blijkt uit de drie romaanse kerken uit de 11e en 12e eeuw, waaronder Saint-Hilaire, dat op de werelderfgoedlijst van de UNESCO staat.
In Melle vindt u het Arboretum du Chemin de la Découverte (1400 soorten bomen, struiken en rozen) en de Karolingische Tuin (130 soorten voedsel, kleurstof en medicijnen). De Jardin d'eau-jardin d'orties van landschapsarchitect Gilles Clément illustreert het ecologische engagement van de stad.
