Melle verdankt seinen Ursprung den silberhaltigen Bleiminen und der Münzstätte, die bis zum 10. Jahrhundert die königlichen Münzen der Karolinger prägte. Die Stadt beherbergt die Pilger von Compostela; davon zeugen ihre drei romanischen Kirchen aus dem 11. und 12. Jahrhundert, darunter Saint-Hilaire, die zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe gehört.
In Melle finden Sie das Arboretum du Chemin de la Découverte (1400 Baum-, Strauch- und Rosenarten) und den Jardin carolingien (130 Arten von Nahrungs-, Färbe- und Heilmitteln).
