De bestekindustrie van Nontron is erfgenaam van een eeuwenoude knowhow en haar geschiedenis is zo lang dat het moeilijk is haar ontstaan te dateren. Specialisten zijn het er echter over eens dat het mes van Nontron het oudste mes van Frankrijk is en dat de oorsprong ervan minstens tot de 15e eeuw teruggaat. De huidige messenmakers maken het Nontron-mes nog steeds met de hand en gebruiken daarbij dezelfde technieken als hun voorgangers. De producten van het Nontron-bestek zijn meer dan alleen maar messen; het zijn strijdbare producten die het behoud in Frankrijk van het handwerk, de knowhow en het grondgebied verdedigen.
