De monniken die de kerk bouwden hebben het dorp wellicht zijn naam gegeven: zij spraken immers van nature Latijn, en het waren vaak zij die hun klooster naar een plaats of rivier noemden
Zo zou het woord Arzenc afkomstig zijn van het pre-Latijnse woord Arisa, dat rivier betekent, en het achtervoegsel Inco, dat plaats betekent
Arzenc zou dus plaats van de rivier betekenen.
