De kapel staat bij de ingang van het kerkhof op de plek van een oud oratorium dat daar in de 13e eeuw stond. In die tijd stond het nog bekend als de Chapelle Notre Dame des Neiges (kapel van Onze Lieve Vrouw van de Sneeuw), maar vanaf de 14e eeuw kwam de naam Chapelle Notre Dame des Garennes (kapel van Onze Lieve Vrouw van de Garennes) in gebruik vanwege de omringende bossen.
Kom kijken naar de Maagd met Kind die een distel in haar rechterhand houdt, een traditioneel symbool voor het werk van vrouwen in het verleden.
