Deze natuurlijke bron ontspringt aan de noordzijde van Cap Roux, in het Esterel‑massief en serveert als verfrissende halte tijdens wandelingen in dit gebied.
In het vulkanische massief van de Estérel zijn weinig natuurlijke waterbronnen. Het gesteente laat weinig infiltratie toe, waardoor de Sainte-Baume-bron een zeldzaamheid is. Het is een permanente bron, wat uitzonderlijk is in deze droge regio. De naam “Sainte-Baume” betekent letterlijk “heilige grot” in het Provençaals.
Nabij de bron bevindt zich een bedevaartsoord. In de christelijke traditie is een bron vaak het symbool van zuivering, leven en geloof. De combinatie van een bron en een grot, zoals hier bij de Sainte-Baume, staat symbool voor spirituele hergeboorte en afzondering.
De bron had een reputatie als “eau miraculeuse” – geneeskrachtig water.
