Deze fontein herinnert aan de oude ziekenhuisfunctie van de plek.
Hier bestond al vóór de 12e eeuw voormalige Hôpital Saint‑Jacques (hôtel‑Dieu),a ls ziekenhuis‑gasthuis dicht bij de middeleeuwse stadsmuren. Het was oorspronkelijk een middeleeuws gasthuis vermoedelijk beheerd door Tempeliers en later door Hospitaliers, en speelde een belangrijke rol voor pelgrims op weg naar Santiago de Compostela.
