De Maas is 950 kilometer lang en ontspringt op het plateau van Langres in Frankrijk in de gemeente Le Châtelet-sur-Meuse. De rivier stroomt door de departementen Haute-Marne (52), Vogezen (88), Meuse (55) en Ardennen (08). Na 486 km stroomt de Maas België binnen.
Het is mogelijk om langs de Maas te fietsen van de bron tot de monding in de Noordzee in Nederland, een totale route van 1.050 km.
