DESCRIPTION

One of the most famous cols in the Pyrenees is the Col d'Aubisque. It is known in the Tour de France as a hors category climb.

Stage 16 of the 2007 Tour de France finished at the summit of the Aubisque. There has been one previous finish at the summit (in 1985). In 1971, stage 16a finished at Gourette on the western approaches to Aubisque. Rasmussen won stage 16 in 2007, in the yellow jersey, confirming himself as the favorite for victory in Paris. A few hours later he was sent out of the Tour by his Rabobank team. However, the Aubisque remains one of his favorite mountains.

There have been 45 passages over the summit since 1947, making it the second most visited mountain in the race's history.

Stage 14 of 2016 Vuelta a España finished at the summit of the Aubisque won by Robert Gesink.

In the sixth stage of the Vuelta 2020, the route would initially lead over the Col de Portalet, the Col d'Aubisque and finally a finish at the top of the Tourmalet. As a result of the Corona problems and the more stringent measures that followed, the organisation decided to adapt the stage and no longer ride over French territory.
The organisation has already presented an alternative stage. The riders will go over the Alto de Petralba, the Puerto de Cotefablo, after which they will finish at the Sallent de Gállego-Aramón Formigal ski station.
