Ponthir is een dorp en gemeenschap in het zuidwesten van het bestuursgebied Torfaen, op de grens van de graafschappen Monmouthshire en Newport. Het ligt ongeveer zes mijl van het stadscentrum van Newport en 3½ mijl van Cwmbran, tussen de nederzettingen Caerleon en Llanfrechfa.
De naam in de Welsh taal geeft de juiste uitspraak aan; dat wil zeggen de 't' en 'h' afzonderlijk uitspreken. De naam verscheen voor het eerst in druk als Pontheere in 1605 en opnieuw als Pont hir in 1677. De naam betekent 'lange brug' en verwijst naar een eerdere brug over de Afon Lwyd, terwijl de huidige in 1800 is gebouwd.
