Birtley is een civil parish in het bestuurlijke gebied Northumberland, in het Engelse graafschap Northumberland.
Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog bestond er in Birtley de autonome Belgische wijk Elisabethville. Tijdens de oorlog woonden er zo'n zesduizend Belgen, die er werkzaam waren in de nabijgelegen munitiefabriek. In 1915 leed het Verenigd Koninkrijk onder een groot munitietekort, het zogeheten shell scandal. De Britse regering gaf de opdracht aan de bekende Noord-Engelse staalfabriek Armstrong-Whitworth om twee nieuwe munitiefabrieken te bouwen in Birtley. De bouw startte in juli 1915.
