Welshpool is een stad in het Welshe graafschap Powys; het ligt in de vallei van de rivier de Severn en heeft sinds 1263 marktrecht.
Welshpool is het centrum van een uitgestrekt landelijk gebied; al sinds de 7e eeuw vond hier elke maandag de grootste Welshe rundveemarkt plaats. De nabijheid van de Engelse grens heeft zich al in de middeleeuwen vertaald in pro-Engelse tendensen; de inwoners spraken traditioneel Engels. Ook het stadsbeeld met een brede hoofdstraat en veel bakstenen huizen is niet middeleeuws, maar eerder georgiaan.
