De Nationale Bibliotheek van Schotland is één van de zes bibliotheek in het Verenigd Koninkrijk die depotplicht kennen. De bibliotheek omvat verscheidene gebouwen in het centrum van Edinburgh. Het hoofdkantoor is op George IV Bridge, tussen de oude binnenstad en de universiteitswijk. De Nationale Bibliotheek van Schotland heeft zo'n 7 miljoen boeken, 14 miljoen gedrukte artikelen en meer dan 2 miljoen kaarten in hun collectie. Deze collectie bestaat uit enkele bijzondere stukken zoals de Gutenberg-bijbel, de brief die Charles Darwin ingediend met het manuscript van de Origin of Species, de First Folio van Shakespeare. Daarnaast heeft het de grootste collectie van Schots-Gaelisch materiaal.
