Nadat burggraaf Sidmouth in 1844 stierf, schonk koningin Victoria White Lodge aan haar tante – de laatste overlevende dochter van George III – prinses Mary, hertogin van Gloucester en Edinburgh. Na haar dood in 1857 besloot Prins Albert White Lodge te kiezen als een geschikte afgelegen locatie voor zijn zoon, de Prins van Wales, de toekomstige Edward VII van het Verenigd Koninkrijk, tijdens zijn minderheid en opleiding. Hoewel de Prins van Wales de voorkeur gaf aan stimulerend gezelschap om hard te studeren, hield Prins Albert hem hier in afzondering, met slechts vijf metgezellen, van wie er twee docenten waren: dominee Charles Feral Tarver, zijn leraar Latijn en kapelaan en Frederick Waymouth Gibbs. Het is begrijpelijk dat de Prins van Wales de paar jaar bij White Lodge saai vond.
