Het station werd geopend in 1882 door de Lynn en Fakenham Railway en werd later het zuidelijke eindpunt van de Midland en Great Northern Joint Railway-lijn van Melton Constable. Het station werd veel gebruikt, met diensten naar Cromer en doorrijtuigen naar een reeks bestemmingen, waaronder Peterborough en Leicester.
Het station werd hard gebombardeerd tijdens de Baedeker-bombardementen in 1942, toen het hoofdgebouw grotendeels werd vernietigd. Het station leed verder schade, samen met de St Philips-kerk, toen een zwaar beschadigde USAF B24 Liberator-bommenwerper daar opzettelijk werd neergestort om een groter verlies van levens te vermijden. Daarna werkte het station vanuit "tijdelijke" gebouwen die op de locatie waren gebouwd. Het werd op 2 maart 1959 gesloten voor passagiers, samen met het grootste deel van het Midland & Great Northern systeem, hoewel het station tot 1969 in gebruik bleef voor goederenverkeer.
