De tuinen beslaan 28 acres in het zuiden van Belfast en zijn populair bij kantoormedewerkers, studenten en toeristen. Ze bevinden zich aan de Stranmillis Road in de Queen's Quarter, met de Queen's University in de buurt. Het Ulster Museum bevindt zich bij de hoofdingang.
De tuinen werden geopend in 1828 als de privé Royal Belfast Botanical Gardens. Het bleef vele jaren een privépark, dat alleen op zondagen toegankelijk was voor het publiek vóór 1895. Toen werd het in 1895 een openbaar park toen de Belfast Corporation de tuinen kocht van de Belfast Botanical and Horticultural Society. De Belfast Corporation was de voorganger van de Belfast City Council, de huidige eigenaar.
