L Ik weet nog waar ik was, toen ik op 5 mei 1981 op het Vlaamse radionieuws hoorde dat Bobby Sands, lid van het IRA en interna-tionaal de meest bekende hongerstaker van Noord-Ierland, aan zijn actie was bezweken. Zo bepalend was die gebeurtenis begin jaren tachtig voor miljoenen mensen buiten Ierland, die dag in dag uit het lot van de hongerstakers volgden. Met de hongerstakingen had het IRA gerealiseerd wat het wou bereiken: wereldwijde aan-dacht en zelfs sympathie voor de republikeinse zaak,
