De Goyt ontspringt op de heide van Axe Edge, nabij de rivier Dane en de Cat and Fiddle Inn. Het gebied staat bekend als de Boven-Goytvallei. De oude Cat and Fiddle Road van Buxton naar Macclesfield kruist de rivier net op het moment dat deze naar het noorden draait om zijn bekende vallei in te stromen. De rivier stroomt vervolgens onder de Derbyshire Bridge, die de oude grens tussen Derbyshire en Cheshire vormde. Later bereikt het een oude pakpaardenbrug die werd verplaatst toen het Errwood-reservoir in de jaren '60 werd gebouwd (zie foto hieronder). Verder stroomafwaarts bevindt zich een ander reservoir, het Fernilee-reservoir. De oorspronkelijke lijn van de Cromford en High Peak Railway is in de buurt van dit punt te zien.
