Portree is de enige stad op Skye al telt het slechts 1500 inwoners. De naam is afgeleid van het Gaelic Port-na-Righ: "de haven van de koning". De koning was in dit geval James V, die er in 1540 de steun van de clans kwam vragen. Daarvoor heette het havenstadje Kiltraglen. In de zomers zijn er diverse folkloristische evenementen, waaronder de Highland Games. Als je rond lunch time arriveert en zin hebt gekregen in een echte fish and chips, dan kom je op de kade eveneens aan je trekken.
