Het park beslaat ongeveer 460 hectare, inclusief bosgebied en een meer van 40 hectare. Het werd in 1967 geopend voor het publiek nadat de Bosdienst van het Ministerie van Landbouw het land van de familie Annesley had gekocht. Kenmerken van het park zijn het Nationaal Arboretum, de Vredesmz en Kasteel Castlewellan.
