Le parc couvre environ 460 hectares, comprenant des bois et un lac de 40 hectares. Il a été ouvert au public en 1967 après que le Service forestier du Département de l'Agriculture a acheté le terrain à la famille Annesley. Parmi les caractéristiques du parc figurent l'Arboretum national, le Labyrinthe de la paix et le Château de Castlewellan.
