De in 1876 opgerichte club werd in 1882 lid van de Football League om daar in 1907 wegens financiële problemen weer uit te verdwijnen. Vanaf 1919 speelde de club echter weer in de Football League. De club kon nooit doorstoten naar de eerste klasse maar bracht wel 41 seizoenen in de tweede klasse door. De aartsrivaal van de club is stadsgenoot Stoke City.
