De DRG kwam voort uit de Trans-Kaukasische Federatieve Republiek, die in februari 1918 werd opgericht na de val van tsaristisch Rusland als gevolg van de Russische Revolutie van 1917. Begin 1921 werd de staat alweer binnengevallen door het Rode Leger van de RSFSR. Na de invasie werd de staat opgeheven en werd de Georgische SSR uitgeroepen, die in 1922 opging in de Trans-Kaukasische Federatie. In 1936 werd de Georgische SSR opnieuw uitgeroepen, ditmaal binnen de Sovjet-Unie en een klein deel van het grondgebied werd aan Turkije toegewezen.
De DRG had grenzen met Rusland, de Bergrepubliek van de Noordelijke Kaukasus, Turkije, Armenië en Azerbeidzjan. Het had een landoppervlakte van 107.600 km² en 2,5 miljoen inwoners. Net als nu was de hoofdstad Tbilisi en de officiële taal Georgisch. De jonge staat had veel interne en externe problemen, waardoor het zich niet tot stand kon houden.
