De rotsen van de Meteora zijn conglomeraten: een mengsel van kalksteenkeien aan elkaar gecementeerd. Hoewel de rots er glad uit ziet van ver weg zal je merken dat het niet zo een gladde rots is wanneer je er dicht bij staat. De rotsen werden afgezet toen het gebied ten zuiden van de Meteora een meer en ondiepe zee was.
