Matala Beach heeft vele grotten uitgehold in de zachte lagen mergel. Deze grotten waren zeer populair in de 'flower power' periode. Het vertegenwoordigde een soort paradijs waar men kan genieten van het leven zonder hard te werken.
Een van de beroemde hippies was de Canadese folkzanger Joni Mitchell. Ze vereeuwigde de plaats in haar nummer Carey in 1971 en in haar plaat Blue.
