Matala Beach has many caves along the side of the beach, eroded in the soft layers of marl. These caves were very popular in the flower power period. It represented a kind of paradise where you can enjoy life without hard work.
One of the famous hippies was Canadian folk singer Joni Mitchell who immortalised the place in her 1971 song Carey.
