De Griekse regering gebruikte het eiland Ikaria om na de Tweede Wereldoorlog ongeveer 13.000 communisten te verbannen en er ook te folteren. Tot op heden heeft de meerderheid van de lokale bevolking sympathie voor linkse partijen en het communisme, en om deze reden wordt Icaria door sommigen aangeduid als de "Red Rock" (Κόκκινος Βράχος, Kokkinos Vrahos). Een van de gevangenen was Mikis Theodorakis, de beroemde componist en bekend van het wereldberoemde deuntje "The Zorba".
