De Egeïsche Zee maakt voornamelijk deel uit van een achterboogbekken (zie grafiek). Een back-arc-bassin is een soort geologisch bassin dat wordt aangetroffen op convergente plaatgrenzen. Momenteel zijn alle achterboogbekkens onderzeese kenmerken die verband houden met eilandbogen en subductiezones. De post-Mioceen-geschiedenis van de Egeïsche Zee wordt gekenmerkt door een back-arc- uitbreiding die al in het Eoceen was begonnen.
