Hier aan deze rotskust kan je kustnotches of in het Nederlands ook wel "brandingskelen" genoemd.
Het is een uitsparing of inkeping aan de voet van een kustklif, gevormd door de voortdurende werking van de branding (golven) die de rotsen uitslijten.
Soms tref je ze ook op hogere hoogte aan en dan heb je een indicatie van uplift (opheffing) of zeespiegeldaling.
Iets moeilijker te observeren zijn kustnotches onder water. Die verwijzen dan naar subsidentie of tektonische daling. Subsidentie (ook wel downreit genoemd in sommige contexten) is het proces waarbij het aardoppervlak juist daalt of wegzakt, Het kan dus ook door zeespiegelrijzing zijn.
