Het toeristische gebied Donegal is vernoemd naar de stad Donegal in het zuiden van het graafschap. Het stond ook bekend als County Tyrconnell of Tirconaill (Tír Chonaill), naar het historische grondgebied. County Donegal was de thuisbasis van de ooit machtige Clann Dálaigh, waarvan de bekendste tak de Clann Ó Domhnaill was, beter bekend in het Engels als de dynastie O'Donnell. County Donegal was een van de ergst getroffen delen van Ulster tijdens de Grote Hongersnood van de late jaren 1840 in Ierland. Grote delen van het graafschap werden verwoest, waarbij veel gebieden permanent ontvolkt raakten. Een groot aantal inwoners van County Donegal emigreerde in deze tijd, voornamelijk via Foyle Port.
