De Oireachtas bestaat uit de president van Ierland en twee kamers: de Dáil Éireann en de Seanad Éireann . Beide kamers vergaderen in Leinster House in Dublin.
Een wetsvoorstel moet in de meeste gevallen door beide kamers worden goedgekeurd, eerst door de Dáil en vervolgens door de Seanad, hoewel de Dáil een weigering van de Seanad om een wetsvoorstel goed te keuren kan overstemmen. Daarna moet de president van Ierland de wet nog ondertekenen om deze van kracht te laten worden.
