De oude abdij van Sacra di San Michele is gelegen op de top van Monte Pirchiriano. Typisch voor de cultus rond Sint Michael is dat de kloosters gebouwd werden op bergtoppen en moeilijk bereikbare plaatsen. Zo ook de Mont Saint Michel in Frankrijk.
Het klooster lag op het traject van Via Francigena, een oude pelgrimsweg tussen Rome naar Canterbury. In de richting naar Rome noemt de weg Via Romea.
